I tried that route with my youngest. I feel like it has so much more to do with the child than the system they are using.
Some kids are hungry to learn and have no problem focusing while others need the environmental cues that it's time to sit down and learn. She takes after me a lot so there is no sitting still and being bored.
But if she was already struggling at school, for her anyway, it wouldn't have made much difference if we would have stuck her in front of a computer for another hour after school. I'd be more concerned with what kind of environment, diet, digital consumption was going on before wondering if we need more of it. Just my 2 cents

Is online learning an option for struggling students,? Yes, it is.

Most school districts nationally use some kind of online learning to help students make up credit in classes they failed .

Furthermore, the THE Journal in January 2016 published an article, “Struggling Students Motivate Districts to Add Online Blended Learning”. The article cited a survey that found that online learning was so desirable for struggling students that “… more than nine in 10 districts (92 percent) fund their online and blended programs through their own budgets, while state funding is available to only about a quarter of respondent districts (24 percent)”.

Yes, online learning is quite advantageous for struggling students.
